Super 46 sandwiches ready for the big game

Anderson misses the cut in contest

INDIANAPOLIS — A few weeks ago, Anderson was chosen as a Super Celebration Site for Super Bowl XLVI.

As a celebration site, Super Bowl organizers are to promote local shopping, attractions, hotels and restaurants.

But local eateries apparently couldn’t cut the mustard to land on a list of the state’s Super 46 sandwiches.

The Indiana Office of Tourism Development recently kicked off a Super 46 Sandwiches competition where diners can pick their favorites from eateries across Indiana.

Voters can go to Super46.com. The winning sandwich will be announced in early February before the big game on Feb. 5.

The 46 candidates include Indiana favorites such as the Reuben at Shapiro’s Delicatessen in Indianapolis, the Bratwurst at the Schnitzelbank in Jasper and the Tom Crean & Crimson Burger at Opie Taylor’s in Bloomington.

There’s also a who’s who of Hoosier tenderloins including the Schweinefilet sandwich served up at the Gerst Bavarian Haus in Evansville.

The nearest restaurant to Anderson is Nickel Plate Bar & Grille, 8654 E. 116th St., in Fishers. Its breaded tenderloin is on the list and currently ranks sixth in voting.

“We think it’s just an honor to be nominated,” said Bob Pollock, owner and manager at Nickel Plate.

The restaurant is getting the word out to voters via Internet at www.nickelplatebarandgrill.com, facebook and signs in Nickel Plate.

“We’re pretty happy that we’re the only breaded tenderloin because I think that gives us an edge. If it’s going to be an Indiana sandwich, it should be breaded tenderloin.”

Amy Vaughan, director of the Indiana Office of Tourism, said the Super 46 Sandwiches promotion was a partnership with the Super Bowl host committee and Indianapolis Monthly magazine.

“Their experts had the tough job of selecting our final 46 sandwiches,” she said.

The Super 46 contest is a separate entity from the Super Celebration Sites effort.

“Factors considered in the final selection included taste, type of sandwich and location. All sandwiches are made fresh at locally-owned and operated restaurants,” she said.

The top two sandwiches, so far, are the Bratwurst at Schnitzelbank and the Duane Purvis All-American burger at the Triple XXX Family Restaurant in West Lafayette.

Vaughan suggested Hoosiers may want to travel if they don’t have a local eatery on the list.

“There’s a lot of good road trips for people from Anderson,” she said.
