FRANKTON, Ind. —
It might not have been the best end result for Senior Night that a Frankton basketball team has ever experienced.
But Eagles coach Dean Riddle found some positives despite a 70-53 loss to Tri-Central here Thursday night.
“There were spots where we played our best basketball of the year,” said Riddle. “Now they were sporadic. But we handled the press as well as we have all year.”
True, Frankton did have just 14 turnovers compared to the 17 by the Trojans. But it wasn’t enough to offset the huge deficit on the boards. Tri-Central had 42 rebounds compared to 25 for the home team.
Most effective on the glass for the Trojans was Rachel Parsons, who had a double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds. Five of those rebounds came on the offensive end and most were converted into baskets.
Senior Whitney Shaffer led Tri-Central with 21 points, 17 of those in the first half. Her output was limited to four free throws over the final 16 minutes. Taylor Richardson scored 19.
Kelsey Key was the game’s high scorer with 23 points, but she had to be very active to reach that level. Hounded defensively, she put up 23 shots and got eight of them to fall. She hit 1-of-8 from 3-point range and just 6-of-11 from the free throw line. She led the team with seven rebounds
Carleigh Tucker was efficient in getting her 19 points, hitting 7-of-15 from the field and all three of her free throws. “I thought Carleigh played very well for us,” said Riddle. “She handled the ball a lot and they pressured us about half the game and we still only had 14 turnovers.”
Only four Eagles scored. Katie Key scored nine, hitting half of her six shots. Payton Dellinger scored two points.
“They have skilled players,” said Riddle of the Trojans. “When you run things with skilled players, you look good. That’s a good team they have.”
In the second half, the Eagles cut the lead to nine on two different occasions and had the ball, but couldn’t score. One time there was a bad pass against the press and another time an easy shot right near the goal was missed.
Frankton ended the season 9-12. The Eagles will play at 6 p.m. Tuesday in the Shenandoah Sectional against the host Raiders.

Lapel sophomore Dane Mason blew the door off its hinges with the first multi-homer game of his high school career — including a walk-off grand slam — and the third-ranked Bulldogs stomped the rival Eagles 14-3 to reach this Class 2A baseball sectional final.

Arabians defend softball title
The Pendleton Heights softball team seemed determined Wednesday to both learn from the past and repeat the parts of it that it found favorable.
That combination resulted in a 7-1 victory over Greenfield and the 4A sectional championship.

Pendleton Heights survives round one
The bottom of Pendleton Heights’ batting order came up big Wednesday, and the Arabians survived to fight another day in this Class 4A baseball sectional.
Brandon Schnepp, Skyler Reis and Augdan Wilson — PH’s seventh, eighth and ninth hitters — combined to hit 6-for-8 with two doubles, four runs scored and four RBIs. That was enough to keep the Arabians one step ahead of upstart Connersville until a five-run sixth-inning rally broke open the 10-4 victory. -

Wednesday was a good night if you were a fan of the Frankton-Lapel Community Schools baseball teams as Frankton knocked off Winchester 17-7 and Lapel routed Muncie Burris 5-1 in Class 2A baseball sectional play.
