7:43 p.m.: Duck family saved from distress
ANDERSON — Good Samaritans rescued a family of ducks at 12th and Jackson streets on Wednesday morning.
Cagney King, who works for XL Marketing in The Herald Bulletin building, noticed the mother duck and her seven ducklings trying to cross 12th Street.
King helped guide the ducklings out of the street and onto the sidewalk, but the mama duck still seemed to be in distress. King then heard squeaks coming from the sewer grate in the street.
“Mama was freaking out,” King said. “After helping the babies get up onto the curb, I noticed that three of her babies had fallen into the sewer. No wonder she was freaking out!”
The ducklings apparently had fallen into the sewer through slots in a circular access grate.
King and two people who came to the scene from the nearby YMCA decided to call the city street department to rescue their fine-feathered find.
Workers from the Anderson Water and Sewer Maintenance Department came to the scene and opened the grate, then used a bucket to scoop the ducklings out one by one.
King reunited the rescued ducklings with their mother under a bush beside First United Methodist Church. The ducks were seen later in the day waddling across the church parking lot. Motorists in the areas should be wary of ducks in the street.
