INDIANAPOLIS — Officials from Indiana’s two racinos told the state on Monday that slot machines appear to be having a spill-over effect on horse racing.
Rick Moore, director of racing at Hoosier Park in Anderson, told the Indiana Horse Racing Commission he’s seeing people travel between the racing and gaming sides of the business and his staff is answering more questions about racing procedures.
“We haven’t forgotten about racing,” Moore said. “People are being exposed to racing.”
He also announced two tentative live shows. The Oak Ridge Boys will be at Hoosier Park later this year and The Temptations will perform in December. Exact dates will be announced soon, Moore said.
Davy Jones is scheduled to perform Friday in a live show at Hoosier Park, and Aretha Franklin is slated for September.
Jon Schuster of Indiana Downs in Shelbyville told the commission that the casino’s temporary location is helping draw people to the nearby racetrack.
Both sites opened their casinos earlier this month. Indiana Downs is working to open its permanent casino in January.
While severe weather likely hurt attendance in the Shelbyville casino’s first days of operation, Schuster said the casino’s 1,911 machines gave out an average of $252 in winnings opening week.
Moore said he did not have comparable figures for Hoosier Park, but he told the commission, “We’re right where we expected to be.”
The Indiana Gaming Commission will release financial reports on both casinos July 8.
