ANDERSON — Jerry Pettit was nominated by Don Collins. Collins’ says this about Pettit in the nomination, “Jerry was a charter member of Madison County’s Habitat for Humanity. He has been a steadying, even-handed influence throughout Habitat’s two decades in our county. Among various positions on the board of directors he has served a term as chair of the board. He has been the construction team leader on the majority of the three dozen homes Habitat has built in Madison County. All of his work, of course, has been as a volunteer. He has expected no recognition, does not know I am writing this recommendation, and, in fact, may not be very happy about it.”
Pettit, indeed, was not thrilled to be recognized, but agreed to allow the recognition to help promote Habitat. In response to the question of what has motivated him to volunteer Pettit said this, “Growing up I never had a whole lot. People helped me along the way. This is payback. Some of the people who helped me are no longer with us, so I help others. I enjoy it.”
Jerry also recognized his fellow volunteers, who have a constant ribbing banter. “Where else can I go to work with guys like these?” Pettit said jokingly after being on the end of a fellow volunteer’s kidding.
