ANDERSON — The Highland Lady Scots tennis team made it two wins in five days against crosstown rival Anderson with a 3-2 victory over the Indians at the South Side Sports Complex on Wednesday.
The Scots defeated Anderson 4-1 on Saturday to win the Madison County Tournament title.
Anderson coach Dave Ellis decided to switch his lineup around, putting his No. 1 and 2 singles players at No. 1 doubles and splitting up the No.1 doubles team among the No. 1 and 2 singles spots.
“It made sense, what he was going to do; we beat them 4-1 (on Saturday) so it made sense to try something different,” said Highland coach Jim Hostetler. “They put the pressure on us and we came through.”
While the end result was still in favor of the Scots, Ellis saw a different approach from his team toward the match.
“We were more pumped up today than we were Saturday,” Ellis said. “When I started talking about the lineup change, (the girls) were looking forward to it. Now the question is what do I do come tournament time.”
The switch didn’t yield any different results at No. 1 or No. 2 singles as Mercy Scott and Ashlan Allison came away with straight-set wins over Taylor Wilson and Ellen Byer, respectively. Both matches had identical scores of 6-0, 6-0 in favor of Highland.
The shakeup did put a win at No. 1 doubles in Anderson’s pocket.
The Indians duo of Meaghan Ellis and Alex Thanas defeated the Highland tandem of Emily Jones and Alaina Coplin 6-3, 6-3.
Anderson’s second win came at No. 3 singles, where Christa Lamb downed Highland’s Sarah Buck in a grinder of a two-set affair, 7-6 (4), 7-5.
“That’s your No. 3 singles,” said Hostetler. “They just keep going at each other.”
Highland picked up its third point at No. 2 doubles.
The Scots combination of Lexi Mechem and Emily Marstall downed Marissa Woschitz and Martha Byer in three sets.
Woschitz and Byer won the first set 6-3. Then Mechem and Martsall bounced back to win the next two sets 6-1 and 6-1.
“Everything unfolded like I thought it would; No. 2 doubles was where I had a question mark,” said Ellis. “I knew it would be a battle.”
“I was especially pleased with my No. 2 doubles team,” said Hostetler. “They’re seniors and they stepped up in the second and third set. They played well.”
Highland (5-0) will travel to Shenandoah today for a 4 p.m. start.
Anderson (3-2) will host Muncie Central in a North Central Conference tilt at 4:30 p.m.
