ANDERSON — Sometime in the next year, drivers at Exit 22 should see major changes on the interchange’s drab south side. The city approved in June a 60-acre development that will bring a hotel, medical and retail sites. Construction is set to begin in spring 2009.
Linda Dawson, Anderson’s director of economic development, said Gateway Commons was a joint effort between the city and Fall Creek Township, with infrastructure improvements coming from both governments.
Tower Investments LLC, the same firm that owns Raceway Industrial Park at the former General Motors Plant 16, will develop the site. An initial plan included 11 commercial lots ranging from just over 1 acre to 11 acres.
Tom Willey, an Indianapolis developer working with Tower Investments on the site, said the company considered other exits along Interstate 69 but chose Exit 22 because of its familiarity with the area and the exit’s potential for future growth.
Willey called Exit 22 “the new gateway into Anderson.”
Tower’s development would likely include heath care facilities, restaurants and a hotel, he said.
