Letter: Race to Top funds never meant to save jobs

In regard to Kevin Karr’s viewpoint as expressed Feb. 8, I would like to add the following information as an explanation for the “additional federal funding” mentioned in Mr. Karr’s commentary. The federal funding mentioned is called Race to the Top and information about it may be found at: http://www2.ed.gov/programs/racetothetop/index.html.

The important components of Race to the Top as stated at the federal web site are ...

* Adopting standards and assessments that prepare students to succeed in college and the workplace and to compete in the global economy;

* Building data systems that measure student growth and success, and inform teachers and principals about how they can improve instruction;

* Recruiting, developing, rewarding, and retaining effective teachers and principals, especially where they are needed most; and turning around our lowest-achieving schools.

It does not take a rocket scientist to see that these are very troubled times for the Anderson Community Schools. Parents are upset with the school closings. Money is tight. Anderson needs additional funding and resources to support its school system and if that type of money is available, then logically, Anderson should have taken advantage of it. However, the Race for the Top funds were never meant to keep teachers’ jobs or schools opened. Rather it was being provided for ... ”for implementing coherent, compelling, and comprehensive education reform.”
