Letter: Uniform policy carried too far

Uniform policy carried too far

The Anderson Community School Corp. is taking this school uniform policy too far. I received a phone call from the assistant principal at North Side Middle School informing me that my son was going to be placed in In-School Detention because he forgot his belt this morning. Now she informs me that this is not his first time forgetting his belt.

My son also received a referral, something that he never gets. He said he tried to explain to the teacher that he was running late for the bus and just simply forgot the belt; but no excuses, it’s policy.

A messed-up policy that is causing my son to miss out on a day’s worth of in-class education, over a belt. So does that mean uniform policy outweighs our children’s education? That’s the question that I have. What if I can’t afford to buy my child a belt? It cost me $12 for my son’s belt. What if I couldn’t afford it? Does that mean my child’s education has to suffer because the economy is so bad, or because I had to pay a light bill, gas bill, etc., and just couldn’t afford a belt?

When are the teachers going to be required to be in uniform? I have encountered several teachers in jeans and tennis shoes, but they still get paid for their services. You lead by example, and practice what you preach. I’m willing to bet that not every teacher in that building has a belt on.
