Letter: Tired of showing his papers for IDs

I am a lifelong resident of Madison County. I was born in an apartment above the Odd Fellows Lodge in Gilman, Ind., 58 years ago.

This letter is the result of my most recent visit to my area BMV to renew my license plates. I paid the state over $500 for the privilege to drive in this country.

I was asked if I wished to obtain a Secure ID at this time. I asked why I would need such an ID since I already had three ID cards with three unsmiling pictures (for facial recognition programs) of my handsome self. I was informed that this would soon be a form of National ID and that if I didn’t have one, I couldn’t enter a Federal Building or fly. I would need to have in my possession, my birth certificate, two pieces of recent mail to verify my address and my Social Security card or voter registration card.

When the time comes to renew my driver’s license I will need all this paper just to apply for the renewal. It then gets sent to the BMV to be processed and if all my papers are in order it will be mailed to me.

Now where have I seen this sort of thing before? Maybe Soviet Russia or Nazi-occupied Europe during World War II? I can imagine that soon we will see checkpoints with storm trooper looking officers or soldiers wanting to see “your papers please.”

Why have we let this go this far? Why haven’t we made our elected officials do their jobs and monitor visas and illegal immigration? They only seem to want to infight and block each other in Washington and the Statehouse. Why are we paying for the government goof-ups with our freedom and rights?

Wake up and see the light! Sen. Bayh has! Along with several other senators and congressmen. Vote the lackeys and naysayers out and put some clout in their place! Vote in new blood to Washington and the Statehouse.
