The National Alliance on Mental Illness of Madison County, which is a volunteer group of family members, persons experiencing mental illness and friends, wishes to express its sincere appreciation and gratitude to Larry Davenport, the Madison County Sheriff’s Department and The Anderson Police Department for their compassionate and professional conduct during the episode described in the Herald Bulletin, March 13, Reader Viewpoint “It’s all how you handle the situation.”
NAMI Indiana has held yearly Mental Health and Criminal Justice Summits with emphasis on proper crisis intervention. The summits have been very well attended by local courts and law enforcement. As taxpayers and voters we applaud them and believe that this is time and money well spent. The decriminalization of mental illness and professional intervention by law enforcement allows persons with mental illness to live and work in our community.
