We need to turn our attention to the PEAT International toxic hazardous waste incinerator plant, proposed to be built on County Road 500 South, next to Mancor.
How Denny Cooper, Mayor Ockomon and the BZA members could approve such a toxic plant is a mystery to anyone who takes the time to research information available on the plasma-arc incineration process.
The fact alone that there are No PEAT International plasma-arc incineration plants in the United States should tell us something about this process. This technology has been turned away in California, Florida and Washington State. When officials of those states could not be provided with proof that there would be no toxic emissions from a plasma-arc incineration plant, they said: Build your plant some where else.
Yet, Anderson city elected officials, given the same information, approved construction of the proposed plant! Isn’t that a comforting feeling for all residents of Madison County? Do we want to jeopardize the health of our citizens over the promise of a few toxic hazardous waste jobs?
The only individuals to profit from this will be Denny Cooper, land owner, and Nelson Slavik, paid consultant for PEAT International Inc. We, the citizens of Madison County, need to unite and let city elected officials know that this is not the type of business for Anderson, Madison County or the state of Indiana.
