Letter: Constitution, ballot box protect all of us

Politicians we elect frequently don't do what they tell us they are going to do

This is my “continued letter,” about Walter Williams sailing from Venice to Athens while doing the bidding of Big Business and denying the influence of John Locke on our Declaration and Constitution.

Regarding the ballot box, Williams is wrong. Politicians we elect frequently don’t do what they tell us they are going to do. The sad truth is that they do the bidding of those citizens and corporations who give them the most money to get elected. They take the property of “us” and give it to the rich and powerful, while claiming they are giving it to “us”.

Williams says, “It’s up to us to ensure that it’s in our representatives’ interest to stand for constitutional government.” Sounds good. But, what if that’s impossible to do? That’s the case in at least 50 seats in the Senate.

If Williams’ pessimism about government is correct and we’re “going down the tubes,” why haven’t we reverted back to the Neanderthal Valley? Our history, including FDR’s years in the Oval Office, demonstrates clearly that Americans have never done the wrong thing for a long time. But it may take a while to flush out the unconstitutional underpinnings of those Williams supported to the hilt.

It’s Big Business that the little guy needs protection against. And the only protection available is the Constitution, our laws and the ballot box.

If pure democracy leads to tyranny, what does pure capitalism lead to? Serfdom?
