As a former teacher and principal of Madison Heights High School (1956-1985), I read, with a great deal of interest, the article on Nov. 11 which acknowledged the placement of a monument on the grounds of Anderson High School in recognition of the 40 years that Madison Heights was in existence. I thank Jim Rogers and all the proud Pirates that worked diligently to accomplish their goal to commemorate their high school.
I recall the professional integrity of the staff of teachers and administrators that worked together as a team to provide a quality education for all those students who graduated during that time period. Some of the graduates served bravely in Vietnam, many became successful across a broad spectrum of professional careers, and many of them became good citizens of their community.
When General Motors departed and school enrollments continued to decline, tough decisions had to be made. The end result was to go from three high schools to two high schools. With heavy hearts but heads held high, the Pirate ship sailed away, never to return. Hopefully, the monument will remind people to never forget Madison Heights High School.
