ANDERSON, Ind. —
Grenades found at Athletic Park on Sunday were replicas, a police spokesman said Tuesday.
According to Detective Joel Sandefur, the five grenades were actually training grenades and were nonlethal. Investigators were able to make the distinction because the grenades were blue and had a hole in the bottom.
Had the grenades been activated, Sandefur said they would have created a small explosion, similar to that of a firecracker.
The Indiana State Police bomb squad was called out to the park to dispose of the grenades, after three boys found them, along with several rounds of ammunition, in a wooded area near White River.
“I would like to commend the boys for notifying police,” Sandefur said.
A search of the area by a K-9 unit uncovered a small safe nearby; however, Sandefur said it was not clear if it had any relationship to the explosives.
Sandefur said the grenades appeared to be old, but couldn’t say how long they had been at the park.
It is possible, Sandefur said, the explosives washed up on shore after floating down the river, which has happened before. Another possibility is that someone might have buried them in the park because they didn’t know how to properly dispose of them.
An investigation by state police is ongoing, Sandefur said.
