ANDERSON, Ind. —
After a year in the position, Nancy Wood has resigned as executive director of the Anderson Symphony Orchestra.
Wood confirmed the announcement Friday. She has accepted a new position as youth pastor and director of Christian education for Central Christian Church in downtown Anderson.
“(The church) decided to put together a new pastoral position,” Wood said by phone from her ASO office. “And I applied, because (besides music), full-time ministry is the other great passion of my life, working for the Lord.”
Her last official day on the job was Friday. According to Stephen Bourke, co-president of the symphony board, the process to find a new executive director had already begun, with the job posted in the Classified pages of The Herald Bulletin and on the ASO website.
“She surprised us with her resignation,” Bourke said Friday. “But we wish her all the best.”
Gayle Jones Burris, executive director of The Paramount Theatre Centre, which is home to the symphony, said that she had been impressed with Wood’s performance in the job.
“She was great to work with,” Burris said. “I’ve only known her for a year, but she loves the symphony and is a big fan of the Paramount.”
Bourke said he agreed with the sentiment.
“Just speaking for myself, we’re going to miss her passion and enthusiasm for the position,” Bourke said. “She had excellent marketing skills that helped us increase our attendance over the prior fiscal year.”
He added that the interview process for the position would probably take 4-6 weeks.
Wood reiterated that she was leaving the position with no hard feelings.
“I don’t want the patrons thinking something awful happened,” Wood said. “I wasn’t job shopping. This place means a lot to me. I’m not going very far.”
