YORKTOWN —
Calvin Jones and Kathy Schneider’s house is “plumb full.”
The Yorktown couple has a passion for looking for and buying antiques but had already filled their home and booths at two Muncie antique malls. The next logical step was to open their own store.
The couple opened Past Time Antiques earlier this month in downtown Yorktown and said things have been going great so far.
“We love doing this and love spending time together,” Schneider said.
Both Jones and Schneider have their own businesses on the side — Jones does sewage work and Schneider cleans homes and does yard work — but this antique shop is something they can do together.
Past Time Antiques has a variety of items but furniture and glassware are their specialties. Other items include linens, collectibles, salt and pepper shakers, oil lamps, chandeliers, mirrors and even restored claw foot tubs.
“Antiques have so much character,” Schneider said. “We just love them.”
The couple are planning to join the community’s Chamber of Commerce and are excited about the challenges of business ownership and being a part of the Yorktown business community.
But the best part of starting the business is giving their passion an outlet.
“We’ve been doing this together for the last eight years,” Jones said of the couple’s auctioning and antique hunting. “And our house is just plumb full now.”
Schneider said one of the things she plans to do with the business is make customer service a priority. She said she’s created a friendly, comfortable atmosphere where she hopes customers feel welcome to come and enjoy leisurely shopping.
“It’s been great meeting a lot of different people,” Schneider said. “I think that may be one of my favorite parts of the business.”
With the store and the antique mall booths, they are able to continue to seek out antiques to keep the store stocked.
The store’s prices, Jones said, are kept low as they are careful when they purchase the items to resale.
And the couple said they are happy to take orders for specific items, meaning they will keep a lookout for the items when at sales.
“This is the best way to keep us doing what we love,” Jones said.
