ALEXANDRIA, Ind. —
An Elwood woman was killed Wednesday when her pickup truck left the roadway and crashed into a cement culvert along Indiana 28.
Madison County Sheriff Ron Richardson said officers received reports of the crash at 7:18 a.m. and arrived by 7:24 a.m. where they found 30-year-old Jerri Leann Rittenhouse in the wrecked truck.
The crash took place along Indiana 28 between County Road 300 East and County Road 400 East.
A witness following Rittenhouse reported that they saw her 1993 Ford F-150 pickup truck swerving in and out of the lane. The witness was about to call 911 when the vehicle, which was traveling west, left the roadway and crashed, bursting into flames, Richardson said.
Richardson said the witness to the crash went to the Rittenhouse’s aid and tried to rescue her from the burning wreckage but the fire made rescue impossible.
The red pickup truck’s front end was embedded in the side of a large, cement culvert on the north side of the roadway.
Alexandria firefighters responded to the scene, putting out the flames that engulfed the pickup truck, but too late to save Rittenhouse.
Members of the Madison County Emergency Management Agency responded, closing Indiana 28 surrounding the crash site for more than two hours as police and firefighters cleared the scene of the wreckage.
Just before 11 a.m., the roadway was reopened.
Richardson said results of an investigation into the cause of the fatal crash are pending.
Madison County Coroner Ned Dunnichay said Rittenhouse died from blunt force trauma to the head and chest.

Getting Together: Silence not golden for this library program
Certain rules govern almost all libraries: be quiet, don’t mar the pages and absolutely no food or drinks on the premises. But a small group of patrons wait until after hours, lock themselves in the back room of the Alexandria-Monroe Public Library, eat popcorn, drink soda and loudly scoff as they watch bad movies.
