ALEXANDRIA, Ind. —
The Alexandria Board of Zoning and Appeals has denied a request to use most of the former Yule Golf Club property for agriculture.
Almost all of the 158-acre property, 800 S. Harrison St., was sold to Yorktown farmer Dale Rinker in late October for just shy of $1 million. The plot is currently zoned as residential, but could be used for agriculture with a special exception petition if the board approved.
That petition was denied last week, said Clerk-treasurer Jan Lynch.
Dr. Robert McCurdy, who owned the 18-hole golf course, said Rinker can void the sale if the property isn’t rezoned or a special exception isn’t granted within 120 days of purchase.
Rinker said he doesn’t have any immediate plans to do that. “I want to appeal,” he said.
If the sale did fall through, Brachen McCurdy, who managed the golf course for his father, said there’s been other interest in the property.
Many residents of Yule Estates, which runs along a stretch of Fairway Drive and is surrounded by the course on three sides, have voiced concern about possible lowered property values if the course were replaced with fields.
“I understand,” Robert McCurdy said. “If I lived out there, I’d be upset, too.”
Jerry Kilgore, 79, who’s lived on Fairway Drive for about 35 years, said he was at the meeting last week and was glad the petition was denied, not only for the sake of his property value, but because losing Yule would be “bad for the town.”
“It’s been here for years,” Kilgore said, speaking of the 45-year-old Alexandria landmark.
Robert McCurdy said the sale was mostly because of the golf course’s suffering financials.
“We just have to stop the bleeding,” he said.
