The city parks department has a fleet of old trucks, a pile of used computers, furniture and even a well-worn Skee-Ball machine that will be for sale.
The board on Tuesday declared a list of park property as surplus merchandise that will be for sale in the city’s surplus auction scheduled for Aug. 21.
Maintenance supervisor Tom Tacket said the list included seven pickup trucks of various sizes, from a 1986 GMC to a couple of 1997 Chevrolets. He told the board that all of them ran or they would not be offered in the auction.
There also are multiple used computers, monitors and keyboards that will be sold as one lot. A refrigerator, chairs and filing cabinets also will be sold.
The parks department is struggling to maintain properties and provide programming after its budget was cut 67 percent this year.
With the help of dollars from outside the park budget, the board was informed that Anderson Parks and Recreation will have two more Born Learning Trails installed. An initiative of the Born Learning Coalition, the trails offer stations for preschoolers designed to teach them to read.
Such a trail exists in Jackson Park, and Born Learning trails are proposed on existing trails at Shadyside and Pulaski parks. Parks workers will install the trail stations, and funding is coming from the Community Development Weed and Seed program, officials said.
