Power off, business open at Urban League
ANDERSON — Madison County Urban League program director Lindsay Brown said Wednesday that though the organization’s building has been without power for a week, there is still someone there during business hours. He said electricians were working Wednesday to replace a “power supply box” that was knocked off of the building’s side last week by a fallen tree.
After a city inspector approves the repair, Brown said, the lights will be back on. He said the expectation is for the power to be restored by the end of this week.
An after-school tutoring program that was due to begin this week has been postponed until Monday, Brown said.
Free ice cream for grandparents
ANDERSON — Good’s Candy is offering free ice cream to grandparents Sunday.
In honor of Grandparent’s Day, Good’s Candy, 1423 W. 53rd St., will be giving grandparents free ice cream from 1 to 9 p.m. Sunday.
Soup kitchen begins serving Sept. 14
ANDERSON — Bethesda Voices of Bethesda Missionary Baptist Church, 2124 Cedar St., will have the grand opening of its soup kitchen from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday.
All are welcome and the meal will be served from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. every Tuesday.
Portion of Henry Street closed
ANDERSON — Henry Street from Ninth Street to 10th Street will be closed from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. today for sewer repair, according to a press release from the city.
Pence in Pendleton on Saturday
PENDLETON — U.S. Congressman Mike Pence announced today that he will attend the Fall Creek Heritage Fair in Pendleton from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. Saturday. He will be at the Madison County Republican Party booth and visiting with attendees along with Kyle Hupfer a candidate for the Indiana House.
UAW retirees picnic Sept. 15
ANDERSON — The United Auto Workers Retired Members Area 7 picnic will be held at noon Wednesday, Sept. 15, at Local 1963 Union Hall, 2840 Madison Avenue. State and local candidates will be in attendance.
Frankton Fire Department to hold fundraiser
FRANKTON — The Frankton Volunteer Fire Department is conducting a fund drive. Representatives will be contacting homes throughout their protection area asking for a $20 donation.
These donations will be used to purchase needed equipment in order to update and improve the service to the community. Each household or business that makes a contribution will be offered a complimentary family portrait as a thank you.
Library budget committee to meet
ANDERSON — The Anderson Public Library Budget Committee will meet Friday at 3 p.m. in the board room.
The library is located at 111 E. 12th St.
Historical Society to hold genealogy class
ANDERSON — A genealogy class will be held by the Madison County Historical Society at the History Center, 15 W. 11th St.
The class is about census records, the most used resource in genealogy research, and will be held on Monday from 1:30 to 3 p.m.
There is no charge.

Seniors self-defense program offered
ANDERSON — Madison County Prosecutor Thomas Broderick Jr. announced that he will be offering a seniors self-defense and safety program on Tuesday.
The one-hour program starts at 10 a.m. and will be held at the PAL Club, located at 101 E Oak St. The program is designed for those individuals over the age of 50.
Individuals can participate in defensive tactics or may choose to watch the presentations. Safety packets of information will also be provided.

City seeks $2.45 million for salaries, pensions
The city needs additional funds to pay for slight increases in firefighter salaries, as well as $2.35 million for the fire and police pension funds. Thursday night at a city council meeting, a funding suggestion was proposed for the latter, but no solution was determined for the first.
