ANDERSON, Ind. — A compilation of news items from the Madison County area:

Jury selected in child molestation trial

ANDERSON – A jury was selected Tuesday in a case that accuses Charles Nute, 29, of inappropriately touching a young female relative for at least seven years. According to a police report, the relative told police that Nute molested her from about 2000 to 2007. Nute was charged with two counts of felony sexual misconduct with a minor, felony child molesting and two counts of felony child solicitation. At the time of publication, it was not clear what the child solicitation charges referred to.



Shadyside veterans paver dedication set

ANDERSON — Mayor Kris Ockomon will preside over the dedication of new brick pavers in the Veterans Commons at Shadyside Memorial Park during a ceremony open to the public at 5 p.m. Thursday.

The personalized pavers bear the name, branch and dates of service for veterans with ties to Madison County. For the first time, a brick will be dedicated in honor of a veteran who served in the American Revolution. Other pavers will honor veterans of the Civil War and both world wars.



SSA offices will close Monday


ANDERSON — All Social Security Administration (SSA) district offices will be closed on Monday in observance of Memorial Day. However, SSA’s national online services will be available on Memorial Day at www.socialsecurity.gov from 5 a.m. to 1 a.m. and SSA’s 24-hour automated telephone services will be available at (800) 772-1213.



Middletown Library to close Monday

MIDDLETOWN — The Middletown Public Library will be closed Monday in honor of Memorial Day, according to Teresa Dennis, director. It will reopen at noon Tuesday.

Patrons are reminded to come in and register for the annual Summer Reading Program by Saturday, June 5. No registrations will be accepted after that day. The theme will be “Be A Bookaneer!” with plenty of pirate decorations and activities.

The actual reading period will be Monday, June 7, through Thursday, July 15. The children’s party will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, July 17.

The library is located at 780 High St.



AARP group to meet  at Perkins on June 2

ANDERSON —  The local chapter of AARP 1686 will meet for breakfast on Wednesday, June 2.

The group will meet at 8 a.m. at Perkins Restaurant and Bakery on Scatterfield Road, Anderson.



Rotary Club makes four grant awards

ANDERSON —  Anderson Rotary Club has made grants totaling $1,900 to four organizations in Madison County. Each agency will receive a check at the June 1 Rotary Club presentation.

Alternatives, Inc. will use its award for its Good Night, Safe Dreams project.

The Christian Center’s Garden Project will use its funding to start a community garden.

CAPE will be introducing a Prenatal Literacy program with its ARC funds.

Highland High School will use their funding to support the school’s final Student Appreciation event.
