ANDERSON, Ind. —
The flickering lights that 20,000 Anderson homes experienced Sunday night could just be the beginning of what may turn into a week full of sporadic power outages, according to city officials.
Bruce Boerner, director of Anderson Light and Power, said the coming week’s high temperatures will tax area transformers as they struggle to beat the heat and handle the added demand for electricity as homeowners crank up the air conditioning.
“This will be an exceptional week for us because we went through the weekend at high temps and we’ll have consistent temperature highs throughout the week,” Boerner said.
Boerner said high temperatures have a two-fold effect on transformers. “The oil gets too hot in transformers due to load and temperature.”
At 11:55 p.m. Sunday, an Indiana Electric power substation faltered, Boerner said, causing outages to two Anderson breakers.
The outage caused the lights in 20,000 south side Anderson homes to flicker.
Clint McKenzie, non-gaming operations manager at Hoosier Park, said that flicker led to a 30-minute power outage at the casino and race track.
McKenzie said the flicker included a power surge that tripped two of the casinos breakers, delaying the generator’s ability to spread power throughout the casino.
McKenzie said slot machines, which are electronic, shut down during the outage but an internal system kept track of customer’s credits, restoring the full amounts when power was restored.
Overnight, two transformers failed due to excessive heat and an increased electricity demand, Boerner said.
The first transformer, located at 3209 Sherman Street, caused an outage at 2:45 a.m. Monday. It was followed by a brief outage due to a failed transformer at 2019 Jefferson Street at 4:15 a.m.
Boerner said the city will schedule work crews accordingly to address any outages caused by the heat.
Report an outage by calling 648-6484.

Getting Together: Silence not golden for this library program
Certain rules govern almost all libraries: be quiet, don’t mar the pages and absolutely no food or drinks on the premises. But a small group of patrons wait until after hours, lock themselves in the back room of the Alexandria-Monroe Public Library, eat popcorn, drink soda and loudly scoff as they watch bad movies.
