ANDERSON, Ind. —
There is no Dave.
But that doesn’t stop people from calling and asking to speak with him or looking for him behind the counter at Dave’s Video.
The Hedge family bought the first store about 30 years ago in Portland, Ind., from a man named ... well, you can guess. It later opened shops across the state, including in Fort Wayne, Muncie and, in 1992, Anderson.
But Monday, the Anderson store announced it was closing shop for good.
“I just decided it’s time to move on to something new,” said Jody Hedge, who owns the Anderson Dave’s Video store, 833 E. 53rd St.
Tuesday, customers milled around the store, picking through plastic video cases, DVDs, video games and consoles.
Nine-year-old Isaiah McGuire peered through a glass display case, pointing excitedly at games and rattling off titles to his mom, Maggie.
“Tomorrow’s his birthday,” said Maggie McGuire, who brings Isaiah to Dave’s fairly frequently. “We thought we’d come in here and find a game he likes while they’re still here.”
Clerk Joey Rossiter said the store’s been a revolving door of longtime customers, dropping by after hearing about the closure.
“All day long, it’s regulars,” he said. “They all say ‘I don’t know where I’m going to go now.’”
Hedge said she plans to keep the store open until its thousands of DVDs, tapes and other media have been liquidated. She’s slashed prices by 25 to 50 percent, but discounts will get bigger as time goes on.
She said the store’s location in Southdale Plaza has drawn a dwindling number of customers, leaving her with a choice between relocating and closing.
“I figured it was about time for a change,” she said.
Rossiter, who’s worked at Dave’s since before it moved to its current location in Southdale Plaza seven years ago, said he’s sad to see it go.
“I love this place,” he said. He scans the store and laughs.
“That’s why I’ve been here so long,” he said. “This is probably the most fun job I’ve ever had.”
