ANDERSON, Ind. —
A California man arrested in Anderson for possession of child pornography said Friday that a movie should be made about him to reveal how technology has made voyeurism easier, the man said Friday.
“Ever since they brought out the laptops and computer, there are just so many ways out there,” said Rodger Suits, 50, in an interview at the Madison County Jail. “There are a ton of people doing what I’ve done.”
Suits, dressed in green and white striped jailhouse attire, said he used a Nintendo DS and camera phone to secretly videotape teenagers at the Greenwood Park Mall and a McDonald’s.
Anderson police have said officers found Suits early Thursday morning near a premiere Anderson fitness club in possession of that footage, other DVDs and other DVDs and pornographic photos of young girls.
Suits is being held on a $15,000 bond for a proposed felony charge of child exploitation.
Suits, appearing reluctant but open about what he has done, spoke to The Herald Bulletin on Friday about his life and how he came to be in Indiana. Above all, he said, he wants to tell the public, “I’m not dangerous at all.”
“Yes, I had the CDs, but I am not a threat to a child, adult or anybody,” he said, more firmly than any other time during the interview.
He said he wants to see a psychiatrist because he believes “something is wrong.” Though he’s been lonely, he said, for the past five and half years since leaving his wife, he cannot say why he began looking at child pornography.
“It started out with adult pornography and moved towards the younger ones,” he said. “I even said, ‘What the hell am I doing?’”
Looking down and twiddling his thumbs, Suits said he worries that two childhood incidents may have contributed to his recent behavior.
He said, in about the second grade, neighborhood boys locked him in a room and tried to rape him. He left and told his mom, but she didn’t call the police. He vividly described a man that, he said, tried to rape him in an alley a short-time later.
“No one was brought in,” Suits said. “Not the police, no one.”
Suits said he recently traveled from California to the Midwest — Illinois and Missouri — with his son, who was looking for work. He came to Indiana alone to visit family throughout Indiana, he said.
It was the draw of the anticipated Indianapolis Colts camp that brought him to Anderson, Suits said, “but, I didn’t make it that far.”
Anderson University spokesman Chris Williams said security teams have been working around the clock to ensure fans will be safe at the camp, which begins Sunday.
“We are going to be dealing with situations as they come to our attention immediately, regardless of what that situation or instance may be,” he said.
While waiting on camp, Suits said Friday, he found work at the Anderson Public Library. Maintaining that he has no interest in the children — only work, Suits said he was hired as “a senior consultant.”
Sarah Later, executive director of the library, said Friday that there’s no way Suits was hired because there has been a hiring freeze since 2008. She had no knowledge of Suits being at the library, she said.
Though in town since April, Suits said, he did not secretly film anyone in Anderson.
Anderson police spokesman Det. Mitch Carroll said Friday afternoon that Suits had only been in town for two days and “really didn’t have the time,” to film in Anderson.
After hearing Suits said he had been in Anderson since April, Carroll said that fact may shift the investigation.
“I think he’s done it for a while,” Carroll said, when asked whether Suits may have been secretly filming across the nation. “He admitted he’s addicted to sex, as well as pornography, as sad as it is.”
Anyone who has information about Suits is asked to contact the police department, he said.
Carroll said police responded to a call at about 4 a.m. Thursday and found Suits parked near the White River Club.
Suits claimed during his jailhouse interview that he had a $10 gym membership, and had been using the locker rooms to shower and change, since he was living out of his car.
While talking to Suits on Thursday morning, officers noticed Suits move a pillow over a notebook and asked to search his car, a police report said.
“I didn’t know why, but I thought I had to, and the rest is history,” Suits said Friday.
Police said they found several DVDs and a stack of photographs depicting girls under 16-years-old in various pornographic natures: fully-clothed, half-nude, nude and in suggestive poses.
Carroll said detectives have yet to view all of the videos, but Suits showed them one “CD” on his personal laptop Thursday morning. It showed his Greenwood footage, police and Suits said.
“I wasn’t looking for anyone to undress,” Suits said, explaining that the footage was in the general breezeway at the mall.
Greenwood Police Department said Anderson police have not yet contacted them about the video.
Suits said he only possessed “a few” DVDs and less than 25 photos, though he couldn’t give an exact number.
“It wasn’t something I was going to do 24/7,” he said.
A police report says officers found a three-ring binder that had a hole cut in it that appeared to be a camera. Suits said Friday he had not ever used the binder.
“I was testing it but I never used it,” he said. “I don’t know, I was bored. I’m very ashamed of what I’ve done. That’s why I want to see a psychiatrist.”
The grandfather of four said he has been around children his entire life and “doesn’t get that feeling” to touch them inappropriately. When asked why he would look at photos, he said he doesn’t know. He said he does not become aroused by the images.
Suits said he has been arrested only once before for sending “silly humor” text messages to his 15-year-old granddaughter two years ago about the 1977 film “Chino.”
The California court, he said, asked him to stay away from the girl for three years.
Suits is not listed on California or Indiana sex offender registries.
Suits said Friday that he has never uploaded, bought or sold any images.
“Everything is free,” he said. “Anyone could do that if they want to. I’m concerned about kids.”
