ANDERSON, Ind. —
Three companies submitted bids on Tuesday to build the public road that would lead to a proposed baseball and softball complex on the city’s south side.
B.L. Brown Construction of Pendleton turned in the lowest base bid to extend 64th Street east from Scatterfield Road. The company said it could do the base job of building the road for $454,763. Optional curbs and lanes could drive the price higher.
The proposed Farm baseball and softball training and tournament complex would be along Interstate 69 just east of Scatterfield Road. The extension of 64th Street is required to reach the property that lies to the east of a Hampton Inn hotel south of I-69.
The city has hired City Securities to sell $6 million worth of bonds that would be repaid by taxes collected on the new construction at the Farm. No ground breaking date has been announced by the project principals who include Anderson trainer Mike Shirley and Highland High School graduate and Toronto Blue Jays star Adam Lind.
The Board of Works referred Tuesday’s road bids to city engineer Mike Spyers, who will recommend a contract award at a later board meeting. Bids also were submitted by Reith-Riley Construction Inc. of Goshen and E&B Paving of Anderson.
In other business, the Board of Works:
u Opened quotes for restoration of the paved areas of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Park at Madison Avenue and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard. Flatland Resources LLC of Muncie submitted the lowest of three quotes, $13,760. Money for the work is coming from federal Community Development funds, and volunteers are helping with other improvements to the park. A quote will be awarded at a later meeting.
u Gave initial approval to transferring money from slot machine revenue and from the city controller’s budget to pay for gasoline for the police and parks departments. The departments asked for just more than $97,000 because of the increased cost of gas. The transfer must be approved by the Anderson City Council.

Getting Together: Silence not golden for this library program
Certain rules govern almost all libraries: be quiet, don’t mar the pages and absolutely no food or drinks on the premises. But a small group of patrons wait until after hours, lock themselves in the back room of the Alexandria-Monroe Public Library, eat popcorn, drink soda and loudly scoff as they watch bad movies.
