ANDERSON, Ind. —
The Department of Parks and Recreation is taking applications for a two-week summer day camp to be held during the weeks of July 26-30 and Aug. 2-6.
Any child in Madison County between 6 and 12 years of age is invited to participate for one or both weeks.
Campers will experience a variety of science-related activities including canoeing (with a chaperone), fishing, hunting for fossils, hiking, learning about wildlife, doing crafts, performing experiments, and taking field trips to the Indianapolis Zoo and/or Muncie Children’s Museum.
“ScienceKids! Day camp will stimulate an interest in wildlife, plant life, astronomy, and natural resources,” according to Tamera Doty-Davis, Park Department landscape architect and science camp coordinator. Activities will start at 9 a.m. each day and will conclude at 4:30 p.m. Children can be dropped off as early as 8:30 a.m. at the Geater Center, 1611 Chase St. Although the emphasis will be on science in everyday lives, children will also enjoy swimming, organized games, down time on the playground, and watching videos with a science theme.
“The activities we have planned are engaging and fun, and will show children that science isn’t just a boring subject in school,” Doty-Davis said.
The cost is $75 per camper per week.
“Several local service organizations have donated generously to make the day camp possible, and those groups will have their logo on the back of each child’s T-shirt”, Doty-Davis said. Some scholarships may be available.
Pamphlets and applications for camp can be picked up in the Park Office, which is located in the Geater Center.
Applications for camp counselors are also available in the Park Office. Snacks and drinks will be provided, but campers will need to bring their own lunch each day along with a recommended bottle of water.
Sheryl Myers, retired Highland High School biology teacher, will be the head counselor, and can be reached at 620-4166 for more information.

Getting Together: Silence not golden for this library program
Certain rules govern almost all libraries: be quiet, don’t mar the pages and absolutely no food or drinks on the premises. But a small group of patrons wait until after hours, lock themselves in the back room of the Alexandria-Monroe Public Library, eat popcorn, drink soda and loudly scoff as they watch bad movies.
