Once in a lifetime

Volunteers seek special experience

ANDERSON, Ind. — Michelle Brandle and her close friends were looking for a unique experience.

When it was announced that Indianapolis would host Super Bowl XLVI in 2012, the trio raced to get online and sign up for a spot to volunteer.

“I’m 61. That’s why this is a once-in-a-lifetime chance,” Brandle said. “I don’t think the opportunity will come around again — at least not in my lifetime.”

Brandle, who works at the Pendleton Town Court, will spend her volunteer shifts at the NFL Experience, a pro football interactive theme park at the Indiana Convention Center. She won’t be alone.

“All three of us got the same shifts,” she said. “I’m very excited.”

Although she won’t attend the big game on Feb. 5, Brandle plans to explore the sights.

“Pendleton has like four buses going down,” she said. “I’m going down to just go through the NFL Experience and be a part of it all.”

That chance for a special experience appealed to Michael Wilson of Alexandria as well.

The 56-year-old general manager of a downtown Indianapolis Jackson Hewitt Tax Service, saw online ads asking for volunteers late last summer.

“I’m a huge sports fan,” Wilson said. “I thought it would be so neat since it’s in Indy.”

His volunteer duties include helping members of the media receive the proper credentials and directing locals and visitors downtown.

“I’ll be offering directional support and helping people,” he said. “I imagine it will be pretty crowded, It’ll be a long day but a fun one.”

Both Brandle and Wilson went to a training session and took testing online to prepare them for their jobs as volunteers.

He won’t get to attend the game in person but said volunteers get a special viewing session.

“They issued us coats and gloves, scarves and hats,” he said. “So that’s kind of a nice extra for volunteering.”

The 8,000 Super Bowl volunteers can be identified by the white and blue scarves they’ll all be wearing. The scarves were all hand knitted and crocheted by volunteers before being adorned with an official 2012 Indianapolis Super Bowl Host Committee logo.

Certain rules govern almost all libraries: be quiet, don’t mar the pages and absolutely no food or drinks on the premises. But a small group of patrons wait until after hours, lock themselves in the back room of the Alexandria-Monroe Public Library, eat popcorn, drink soda and loudly scoff as they watch bad movies.
