Ice cream event to help food drive
ANDERSON — Information Services, in the Anderson city building, will host an ice cream extravaganza to help the We Can Care Food Drive of Madison County from 11:45 a.m. to 2 p.m. today in the ground floor lobby.
Ice cream desserts, including floats, sundaes and brownie sundaes, will be served.
Cost is $2 for floats, $3 for sundaes, $4 for brownie sundaes. In lieu of cash, patrons can bring in canned goods, which will be valued at 50 cents per can.
State police to run sobriety check
DELAWARE COUNTY — The Indiana State Police Redkey District will conduct a sobriety checkpoint during the late-evening hours Saturday in Delaware County. The checkpoint is an effort to reduce alcohol-related crashes; troopers will also observe for other alcoholic beverage violations and take appropriate enforcement action.
Census bureau still needs workers
MUNCIE — The Census Bureau is still testing for employment, possibly through March, so time is running out to take the test to be employed. Temporary, part-time positions will be offered.
To take the test bring either one current passport as ID: or 2 forms of ID including one driver’s license plus Social Security card or birth certificate. For other acceptable IDs call for information at 587-1720.
Testing will be held at Middletown Library on High Street on Monday at 9:30 a.m. and also at 1 p.m.; and Wednesday at 9:30 a.m.
Anderson Public Library, 111 E. 12th St., is also testing several times — Saturday, at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m.; Sunday, at 2 p.m.; Monday, at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m.; Wednesday, at 3 and 6 p.m.; Friday, March 26, at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m.; and Saturday, March 27, at 11 a.m.
Other testing will be at 3 p.m. today at the Pendleton Library, 595 E. Water St., Pendleton.
Elkhart factory set to close will stay open
ELKHART — An auto parts maker has decided to keep a northern Indiana factory open after announcing last month that it would be shut down.
Company officials say the Gunite Corp. factory in Elkhart will stay open to help meet an increase in orders made since the beginning of the year.
Trailer company buying closed factory
NORTH MANCHESTER — A trailer company is buying a closed northern Indiana factory and plans to resume production work there.
Executives of Novae Corp. joined Gov. Mitch Daniels in announcing plans for the company’s expansion in North Manchester, where it expects to employ perhaps 85 people by 2013.
Work starts on new highway bridge
LAFAYETTE — Construction work is starting on a new highway bridge near Lafayette that will end years of traffic delays caused by slow freight trains.
Local and state officials participated Wednesday in a groundbreaking ceremony for the $5.4 million bridge for U.S. 52 a few miles southeast of Lafayette.
Workplace guns bill gets Daniel’s signature
INDIANAPOLIS — Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels says a bill he signed into law allowing people to bring their firearms to work is written in such a way that it may invite lawsuits.
The law, which takes effect July 1, lets workers keep guns locked out of sight in their vehicles while parked on their employers’ property.
Daniels cited gun owners’ rights under the Second Amendment and the Indiana Constitution and its broad support in the Legislature in signing the bill Thursday.
But he also said lawmakers might want to clean up “ambiguities” in the law that could invite lawsuits. He was referring to provisions exempting some employers including schools, child care centers, domestic violence shelters, and some utilities and chemical plants.
Opponents say the law could lead to workplace violence.
