ANDERSON, Ind. —
An Anderson man who pleaded guilty to stabbing a woman to death was sentenced Tuesday to 65 years in prison.
Eddie Hargrow, 68, confessed to stabbing Beverly Burnett, 48, upon his arrest Feb. 5; however, he did not plead guilty until a few days before jury selection was to begin July 24.
According to the probable cause affidavit, Hargrow told police he visited Burnett at her house to purchase cocaine. During their encounter, Hargrow said he believed Burnett was attempting to steal from him, so he grabbed a kitchen knife and stabbed her.
Burnett was transported to Saint John’s Medical Center, where she later died.
Representing Burnett’s family on Tuesday was her son Bonnell Anderson, who testified they are still trying to cope with her death.
“We’ve been struggling, waking up in the middle of the night just thinking about it,” Anderson said.
Anderson described his mother as a “loving” and “outspoken” woman, who made a living driving a bus and loved riding motorcycles and spending time with her grandchildren.
Hargrow’s incarceration at the Madison County Jail caused several issues, as he suffers from multiple health conditions, and required being connected to a dialysis machine. According to Circuit Court 3 Judge Thomas Newman, keeping Hargrow at the jail was becoming expensive so the prosecution allowed him to be released on in-home detention beginning May 30. During that time Hargrow underwent a medical procedure, that had he been incarcerated the county would have had to cover.
Following the procedure, prosecutors removed Hargrow’s in-home detention, and he was transported back to the county jail.
Anderson asked Newman not to consider Hargrow’s medical condition as a mitigator.
“He had health conditions when these incidents occurred, it shouldn’t be an issue,” he said.
Deputy prosecutor Steve Koester said Hargrow’s medical condition could almost be an aggravator, since he showed recklessness for his well-being by smoking cocaine. Koester called the murder a “senseless act,” and noted that Hargrow has been involved in two previous stabbing cases.
Hargrow did not say much during sentencing, but after his wife said she loved him in court Hargrow responded, “I love you too. I made a mistake and I’m sorry.”

Study reflects local hospital costs on par
It’s hard to say what’s worse — being hospitalized, or the bill that follows.
But in some places, that bill might be a bigger hit than others: Say, Monterey Park, Calif., for example, where an inpatient being treated for heart failure could expect to pay about twice the average between Madison County’s Community Hospital Anderson and St. Vincent Anderson Regional. -
