Coroner: Shooting victim died of multiple gunshot wounds

Victim and suspect knew each other

LAPEL, Ind. — A preliminary autopsy showed the victim in this morning’s shooting in the 6400 block of West County Road 300 South died of multiple gunshot wounds, said Madison County Coroner Marian L. Dunnichay.

She identified the victim as Spencer Smith, 22.

A suspect in the shooting, Malcolm Douglas Cobb, 45, of rural Anderson, is being held without bond at the Madison County Jail on a preliminary charge of murder, said Sheriff Ron Richardson.

He said detectives are still conducting interviews to determine what events led to the shooting, which occurred about 3 a.m. this morning.

Police spent most of the morning and early afternoon at the residence, and it appears the two men knew each other.

The investigation is ongoing, Richardson said.

The Herald Bulletin will continue to update this story.
