The Herald Bulletin will announce its Person of the Year on Monday, New Year’s Day, as chosen by the newspaper’s editorial board.
The person will receive a check for $500 to go to his or her favorite charity.
Some of the candidates who received consideration are as follows:
n James Burgess — president of the local NAACP for his efforts in bringing the state NAACP convention to Anderson.
n Rodney Cummings — Madison County prosecutor who was instrumental in shutting down the alleged gambling empire of John Neal.
n Dr. James Edwards — president of Anderson University for spearheading the ambitious $110 million fundraiser for university improvements.
n Carl Erskine — for his longtime involvement in the community and Special Olympics.
n Bill and Gloria Gaither — for their efforts, along with their worldwide gospel ministry, in promoting Anderson University and Madison County.
n Killbuck Concerned Citizens Association — for its efforts in opposing a landfill in Richland Township.
n Ralph Reed — Owner of the land on which the proposed Mallard Lake landfill will sit, for his 27-year efforts to keep his business alive.
n Ludy Watkins — Madison County clerk who helped voters learn the new electronic voting machines and whose efforts made for a smooth November election and the June recount in the school board race.
