6:34 p.m.: Animal lover starts search party for missing bichon frise

By JASON MICHAEL WHITE

An Anderson resident is leading the search for a dog running loose near the city’s water treatment plant.

Jan Ault, 60, who calls herself “Animal Lover Jan,” has gone door-to-door and followed paw prints in the snow to find the dog, named Mia, a 4-year-old bichon frise with a blue leash attached to her collar.

The dog is not Ault’s, and she does not know the pet’s owners. But she loves animals and wants to help missing pets find their way home, she said.

On Sunday, she worked with the Humane Society and Small Paws Rescue to organize a search party for the dog, which has been missing for a week.

“We are going to find that four-legged angel,” Ault said.

Mia was first spotted in the backyard of Anderson resident Tami Wilson, who lives near Eighth Street and Gene Gustin Way.

Wilson noticed the dog Tuesday when her own pet started barking at it. She assumed the dog was a missing pet because it had a blue leash attached to its collar.

“I would go out and call for it, but it acted like it was scared to death,” Wilson said.

Wilson posted an online ad to let people know she saw a missing dog in her area.

A friend of Ault’s told her about the ad, and Ault has been searching for Mia ever since.

She has talked to several community members who have seen the dog near the city’s water treatment plant. But Mia runs from whoever tries to approach her, Ault said.

Ault is asking anyone with information about Mia to call her at (765) 228-4825. She has been in contact with the pet’s owners, who responded to Wilson’s ad.
