Two Highland High School singing groups arrived home to Anderson Sunday night after winning grand champion honors at Disney World.

A police escort and carloads of parents met the two busloads of students at Exit 26 about 8:30 p.m. and escorted them home down Scatterfield Road. Supporters had posted signs at the high school to welcome the national champions.

The girls show choir Starliters and mixed show choir Highland Singers attended the Showstoppers Show Choir Invitational at Walt Disney World in Florida during the weekend.

The Highland Singers won the grand champion trophy after competing with 11 other mixed choirs from six states Friday, and then won in the finals against five other top choirs on Saturday, according to a news release.

The Starliters also won a grand champion trophy, and both groups were awarded scholarships. The Highland Singers won the $2,500 James E. Dash Memorial Scholarship for Artistic Excellence, and the Starliters won the $1,500 James E. Dash Memorial Scholarship for Artistic Excellence, according to a spokesman for the Showstoppers competition.

They performed at the American Gardens Theater at Epcot.
