ELWOOD — Prosecutors filed nine counts Thursday against an Elwood man accused of robbing a pair of residents in their homes at gunpoint in March.
Glen E. Gill, 30, was arraigned on multiple charges of armed robbery, unlawful possession of a firearm by a serious violent felon, and carrying a handgun without license. Charges of being a habitual offender were also filed because of Gill’s lengthy criminal record.
Four of the charges against Gill are Class B felonies punishable by six to 20 years in prison, if convicted. He’s also charged with two Class C felonies, which carry terms of two to eight years. If convicted and found to be a habitual offender, he could face even more time behind bars.
Gill is being held in jail on $100,000 bond.
Madison County Magistrate Stephen Clase appointed attorney Leeanna Kirkwood as Gill’s public defender, but she could not be reached for comment late Thursday.
According to a probable cause affidavit:
Gill knocked on the door of a South I Street home around 10 p.m. Sunday, March 9. Gill asked the 84-year-old resident if he could come inside and use the phone because his car had broken down and his wife and children were stranded.
Gill pretended to use the man’s phone, but eventually pulled out a handgun and ordered the man to give him money. The man gave him $100, but Gill demanded more. The resident then gave Gill more than $400. Gill then threatened to tie the man up, but instead fled the home.
A week later, Gill entered another home, also on South I Street, through a back door at about 8 p.m. He confronted a 77-year-old woman at gunpoint in her living room and demanded money.
The woman gave Gill about $50 from her purse in the kitchen, but Gill wanted more. When the woman said she didn’t have any more cash, Gill began pulling out kitchen drawers searching for money. Before leaving the home, Gill threatened to kill the woman if she called officers, saying he had a police scanner and would know.
Neither homeowner was apparently injured in the incidents, according to the affidavit.
Investigators received a tip on March 20, saying Gill was responsible for the armed robberies. On March 28 they learned Gill was likely in Clinton County, and sheriff’s deputies there took him into custody.
During questioning by Elwood detectives, Gill reportedly admitted to the robberies.
