2 p.m.: Rotary awards six scholarships

The Anderson Rotary Club awarded scholarships to six local high school students Tuesday during a luncheon at Anderson Country Club. Awards were based on academic success, plans to pursue higher education, embodiment of Rotary motto (service above self) and good citizenship.

Scholarships of $1,000 are awarded annually to students from Anderson, Highland and Liberty Christian high schools and one from another Madison County high school. Plus, two $500 scholarships are awarded to student who participate in Interact, Rotary’s youth group.

The following were each awarded a $1,000 scholarship:

Genevieve Brumfield: Liberty Christian student. Varsity volleyball and softball; Hero of the Faith Award; student council member; mission trips to Dominican Republic and Costa Rica; Timothy Award. Plans to study scripture and discipleship at Moody Bible Institute in Chicago.

Cole Builta: Anderson High School student. Rotary Interact; National Merit Finalist; academic skill bowl; Youth Leadership Academy of Madison County; National Honor Society; Scholars of Character; hospital volunteer. Plans to study psychology at Valparaiso University.

Sarah Eder: Pendleton Heights student. National BETA Club; class treasurer; oratory competition winner twice; Youth Leadership Academy of Madison County; rookie EMT; St. John’s volunteer; Hurricane Katrina relief effort. Plans to study pharmacy at Purdue University.

Kiely Fox: Highland High School student. Varsity swimming; Highland Madrigals; peer tutor; Rotary scholar of the month; Rotary Interact; H-Club member; academic achievement award (9th-12th). Plans to study special education at Anderson University.

The following were each awarded a $500 scholarship through Interact:

Abby Beard: Highland High School student. Class president; senior executive council; National Honor Society; varsity tennis and soccer; show choir; valedictorian in class of 302; Rotary Interact co-president. Plans to study graphic design at Palm Beach Atlantic University, Fla.

Amanda Laflamme: Anderson High School student. Rotary Interact co-president; speech and debate team; senior executive council; third academically in class of 271; theatre club; Indiana Girls’ State; volunteer at St. John’s. Plans to study film production at Anderson University.
