ANDERSON — Authorities on Thursday were investigating at least two possible sightings of fugitive Richard Hudson while also handling empty leads.
Anderson police Detective Mitch Carroll said authorities in western Ohio were reviewing surveillance video from a Wal-Mart pharmacy that Hudson, 52, may have entered Wednesday. That same day, attendees at a fair near Portland, Ind., also may have seen Hudson, said Sgt. Bill Casey of the Anderson Police Department.
Authorities believe Hudson, 52, was in Jay County on Tuesday. He has been on the run since Monday after he abducted his attorney, Thomas Hamer, at knifepoint, stole Hamer’s 2007 Ford Escape and left the attorney tied up in Rangeline Nature Preserve in Anderson, police said.
Anderson police have received calls from people claiming to have seen Hudson in the Indianapolis area, and at least three local people called the police department on Thursday to report sightings that turned out to be false, Carroll said.
“The problem that we’re getting is that if he hasn’t changed his appearance by now, he looks like a lot of other folks with the salt-and-pepper hair and scraggly beard,” Carroll said. “I think he’s definitely left the area. Whether he’ll return or not, it’s hard to climb into the mind of somebody like this.”
Hamer was driving Hudson back to the Madison County Jail after a Social Security hearing in Indianapolis when Hudson put a knife to the attorney’s throat. Hudson also stole the lawyer’s wallet, cell phone and other personal items, police said.
Casey said police do not know how Hudson is traveling, but he may be with friends. They have received no indication that he has tried to use Hamer’s credit cards.
Hamer was able to untie himself Monday and flag down help. On Wednesday, authorities in Delaware County found Hamer’s sports utility vehicle abandoned in the parking lot of an Aldi Food Store, said Harold Mason of the Delaware County Sheriff’s Department.
Hudson had been in jail for three weeks on a misdemeanor domestic battery charge.
