7:30 a.m.: Indiana drivers logging fewer miles

Indiana drivers are puting the brakes on.

According to a report from the Federal Highway Administration, Indiana motorists drove 336 million fewer miles in May 2008 compared with May 2007, a 5.3 percent decrease.

The decline is among the largest in the nation. Only three states saw sharper decreases: Michigan is down 7.4 percent, Arkansas is down 5.6 percent and Rhode Island down 5.4 percent. Vermont and Delaware matched Indiana at 5.3 percent.

Americans overall drove 9.7 billion fewer miles this May, compared to a year ago, a 3.7 percent decline.

The study focused on May, which normally ushers in the summer driving season with Memorial Day. Traffic was counted by cables that estimated the number of miles driven.
