INDIANAPOLIS — A Markleville resident won $88,000 playing a Hoosier Lottery scratch-off game recently.
Von Smith was on his way to Hoosier Park Racing & Casino in Anderson when he stopped at the city’s Meijer store to cash in some winning lottery scratch-off tickets, according to a news release from Hoosier Lottery.
Smith bought two more tickets, one being the new game, “8 Times the Luck,” and won the game’s top prize of $88,888. He claimed his winnings in Indianapolis on Friday.
“I asked the cashier ‘I did win, didn’t I?’” he told lottery officials, according to the release. “Then I called my wife. She didn’t believe me.”
Smith purchased his winning scratch-off ticket from Meijer, 6630 Scatterfield Road.
He and his wife of 33 years, Mary, plan to put part of the money in the bank and to buy a new car.
“I thought, ‘Boy, it would be nice to win it,’” Smith said. “I never dreamed I would.”
The news release did not specify whether Smith bothered continuing on to Hoosier Park.
