ANDERSON — An Anderson man is being held on $10,000 bond for allegedly threatening his neighbor with a small knife because of an ongoing dispute over a driveway.
Prosecutors charged Anthony L. Hopgood, 30, with intimidation, a Class C felony punishable by two to eight years in prison if convicted. He was being held in the Madison County Jail late Monday, after making his initial court appearance earlier in the day.
According to a probable cause affidavit:
Police were called to the 1300 block of West Ninth Street at about 9:45 p.m. Friday after a neighbor said Hopgood was causing a disturbance and threatening him with a knife.
Witnesses said the dispute grew out of an argument earlier in the day. Police were called to the home several hours earlier Friday.
The neighbor, a male, said Hopgood had allegedly called his cousin earlier in the day and threatened him. When the neighbor came home, Hopgood ran up to the neighbor’s vehicle and said he was going to “kill (the neighbor) before the night was over,” according to court documents.
The neighbor drove around the block and then pulled into his driveway. Shortly after getting out his vehicle, Hopgood, now armed with a small kitchen knife, ran up to the neighbor and again threatened to kill him. Fearing for his safety, the neighbor picked up a board and hit Hopgood in the back. Hopgood then picked up a cement block and threw it through the driver’s side of the neighbor’s vehicle.
Hopgood then ran back into his home, and police were called. Why the neighbors were arguing over the driveway wasn’t revealed in the report.
Prosecutors also charged Hopgood with misdemeanor criminal mischief for breaking the vehicle’s window. He was arraigned on the charges Monday, and an automatic not-guilty plea was entered on his behalf.
