7:53 p.m.: Marching Highlanders end season on winning note

Highland High School’s Marching Highlanders extended their competitive season by one event and the result was five trophies Saturday at Lawrence Central High School in Indianapolis.

Performing their 2008 season Swingin’ Scots show one last time, the Marching Highlanders swept the awards at The Spirit of Central Invitational, taking first overall in Class B while also winning awards for Best Music, Best Visual and Best General Effect. Highland also won the People’s Choice Award, which was voted on by spectators.

“I thought it was a really nice way to end the competitive season and the kids seemed to really enjoy performing the show,” said Doug Fletcher, Highland band director. “Winning the People’s Choice Award meant a lot. It was a good day.”

Pendleton Heights placed second in Class B with Mount Vernon finishing third and Cathedral finishing fourth.

High school marching band competitions are divided into two seasons: the track show season, which takes place during the summer and culminates at the Indiana State Fair, and the field show season, which takes place in the fall. Band’s typically compete during one season, but can compete in both. Highland has most recently competed during the track show season, but has performed field shows in the past.

Field show competitions are divided into four classifications based on school enrollment, with Class A being for the largest schools and Class D for the smallest. Other class winners Saturday were Carmel (Class A), Angola (Class C) and Tri-Central (Class D).
