ANDERSON — It was a perfect storm in the city Tuesday and Wednesday when heavy snow hit while Mayor Kris Ockomon was out of town on an economic development trip.
Add to it that Deputy Mayor Greg Graham has been out of commission for nearly a month following surgery, and someone had to step in to run the city during the winter emergency.
City Councilman David Eicks did the honors, asked to be the acting mayor by Ockomon before his West Coast trip. Eicks issued Tuesday’s travel warning and Wednesday’s snow emergency that encouraged motorists to stay off the roads and shut down city offices.
“If there’s an emergency, there’s official actions that have to take place,” said Eicks, who is acting as mayor for the first time. “Someone has to step in to do those. I don’t think anybody could predict the snow was coming. We actually got hit harder than what was predicted.”
Graham said when the mayor is out of town, it has been customary for him to pick someone from the City Council to serve as acting mayor. Eicks will not be paid extra for acting as mayor.
“Generally it doesn’t really amount to anything because nothing happens,” he said. “Nine times out of 10, nothing will happen.”
According to city ordinance, Graham still is the deputy mayor who fills in for the mayor at events and can speak on his behalf.
