By Justin Schneider, Herald Bulletin Online Reporter/Manager

ANDERSON — Madison County Sheriff Ron Richardson urges motorists to lock car doors and keep their keys and other valuables with them after a rash of vehicles were robbed or stolen in southeast Madison County.

During a 38-day period from Oct. 16 to Nov. 23, Richardson said, six vehicles were stolen and seven others robbed of valuables.

All 13 incidents took place in the Chesterfield-Union Township and Markleville-Adams Township areas.

“In the cases involving stolen vehicles, the cars were left unlocked,” Richardson said, adding that, in a few cases, the keys were inside.

Two vehicles were recovered at a mobile home park in Middletown, two in Anderson and one less than a mile from the site of another incident.

“Items taken from vehicles left unlocked ranged from money, football tickets, stereo equipment and, in one case, a handgun was taken,” Richardson said. “Things are getting tight for a lot of people.”

Richardson urges anyone with information about the incidents to contact Det. Doug Beltz through the Madison County Dispatch Center at 642-0221.
