ANDERSON — The Independent Union of Operating Engineers Local 112 will add a training center to its union hall to teach its members additional electrical skills.
The 4,800-square-foot addition will create classrooms, an X-ray room, a dark room, processing rooms, equipment rooms, an electrical room and restrooms. The plan was approved Wednesday by the city’s Board of Zoning Appeals.
Local 112 officer Sandra Cronk said IUOE members from across the country will come to the training center at 2715 S. Rangeline Road for classes that will be held in the winter during the profession’s off-season.
Students will stay at local hotels and utilize local businesses while in Anderson, she said.
About 12 students will initially be trained, Department of Municipal Development Assistant Director Tim Stires said.
Also at Wednesday’s BZA meeting, the board approved petitions allowing Anderson University to build two new seminary homes in the 500-600 blocks of East Sixth Street. The 2,100-square-foot homes will allow the school to keep up with its w aiting list of seminary students, AU representative Joe Royer said.
Royer said university officials hoped to have the houses ready for occupation by next year’s fall semester, depending on enrollment figures.
