ANDERSON — James Warner says he just wants to be of service, to the community and to God.
“I enjoy helping,” he said.
The 72-year-old helps fill bellies with his Geater Center Thanksgiving Dinner, spends most of Sunday as a radio host and even sings in a gospel group.
Last year, more than 1,400 people ate at the center. This year, more than 1,100 were served.
But, Warner is certain that his dinner wouldn’t be a success without help from the Geater Center, Pay Less Super Market and community donations.
“People have been beautiful about donating to this thing; that’s with their money and their time,” he said.
On Sundays, Warner broadcasts on several local radio stations. Sometimes he has guest preachers, and he often gives callers a chance in the spotlight.
“I let them call in and talk or sing or whatever,” he said.
From 6 to 8 a.m., he hosts a show on MAX Radio (WMXQ-FM 93.5 and WMQX-FM 96.7). From 10 a.m. until 11 a.m., Warner can be heard on WHBU-AM 1240. And, from 6 until 8 p.m., he’s on WQME-FM 98.7.
“I’m playing music, preaching and praying,” he said.
Warner invites listeners to tune in on Martin Luther King Day when a panel of men will discuss King. He also invites them to listen in on his 35th anniversary in April.
For Christmas Day, Warner played Christmas and gospel music for four hours.
Off the air, Warner added a special project for Christmas.
He and his grandson restarted a Christmas sack tradition that he hadn’t done in about five years. The pair stuffed 67 sacks with candy, apples and oranges to give away. He also hid a $10 bill in the bottom of one extra bag.
Warner can also be heard singing with his old group – the Heavenly Five – on special occasions.
