due date to Jan. 15
ANDERSON — Kathy Stoops-Wright, Madison County auditor, has extended the date to file exemptions for property owners in Madison County through Jan. 15.
The Madison County Government Center will be closed Friday.
County treasurer’s office closing at 1 p.m.
ANDERSON — Due to the end-of-year closeout, the Madison County treasurer’s office in the Madison County Government Center will be closing to the public at 1 p.m. today, according to Darlene Likens, treasurer. The office will also be closed on Friday.
United Way gets new board members
ANDERSON — United Way of Madison County will begin the new year with seven new board members serving the organization. They are Jim Brown (Hoosier Park), Angela Cassidy (trust manager with JP Morgan Chase Bank), Dana Donahue (vice president of commercial lending for Old National Bank), Lisa Floyd (executive director of South Madison Community Foundation), Rick Moore (branch sales manager for MainSource Bank), LeRoy Quashie (former pastor of Sherman Street Church of God) and Jim Willey (vice chancellor Ivy Tech’s Anderson campus).
Board members completing their terms Dec. 31 are Sally DeVoe, serving on the board since 2006; JoDean Washington, serving on the board since 2002; and Mayor Kris Ockomon, serving on the board since 2008.
Road closed for fallen utility pole
ALEXANDRIA — Part of County Road East 1550 North was closed until an American Electric Power crew could replace a fallen pole, according to traffic on the police scanner.
Authorities reported at about 9 p.m. Wednesday that a light pole had fallen in front of a house in the 200 block of East 1550 North.
No further information was available at the time of publication.
Pedestrian injured in auto mishap
ELWOOD — An Elwood driver caused a pedestrian-involved accident after his vehicle slid off an icy road Wednesday morning, according to Madison County Sheriff Ron Richardson.
Richardson said Darrell Stoneburger, 54, turned onto Sheridan Street from 21st Street, striking a parked vehicle whose driver was in the doorway. The driver, Kevin Haynes, 42, was thrown into a ditch.
Richardson said Haynes was transported to a local hospital. No charges were filed.
Crash sends 5 teens to hospitals
ADAMS TOWNSHIP — A county road closed for six hours Tuesday after a vehicle of teenagers hit a utility pole in Adams Township, according to Madison County Sheriff Ron Richardson.
Richardson said a 16-year-old driver lost control of a 1993 GMC Jimmy on County Road 500 South. The car hit a guy wire, a utility pole and a mailbox, Richardson said.
The driver and his four passengers were transported to local hospitals with various pain complaints. No charges were issued, Richardson said.
Fireworks store destroyed by fire
FORT WAYNE — A Fort Wayne fireworks store broke out in flames, causing numerous loud booms and heavy smoke as bottle rockets and other items exploded inside.

Iraq veteran displaced after apartment fire
