ALEXANDRIA, Ind. —
Local fifth-graders will combine Arbor Day and National Poetry Month with help from the local biorefinery Friday.
Poet Biorefining invited local fifth-graders for the second year in a row to help plant trees and enjoy lunch catered by Rachel’s Highway Cafe.
“We will talk to the children about the Earth, environment and going green,” said Dave Hudak, Poet general manager.
Poet’s local facility produces ethanol.
“The benefits of ethanol is that it’s a clean, green, high-tech fuel,” he said. “We’re trying to help get the country off foreign oil and get a cleaner environment.”
Because April is also National Poetry Month, Poet is having a poetry, or Poetree, contest.
“I find it hilarious. April is poetry month. Arbor Day is the end of April and they have a Poetree event,” said Lisa Martin, an Alexandria-Monroe fifth-grade writing teacher. “The kids are really excited about going.”
The poetry contest is optional, but Martin said most students participated, writing poems about the environment.
The winner of the local poetry contest is entered into a corporate contest.
“We want to try and keep the winners in Indiana,” Hudak said. “Last year the grand-prize winner was from Portland.”
Each student is sent home with a sapling provided by the Madison County Soil and Water Conservation Department.
“It’s part of our way of giving back not only to the environment but the community,” Hudak said. “Our future is in the hands of these fifth graders.”
Martin said 117 fifth graders from Alexandria and about 55 from Summitville will attend the Poet Arbor Day event.
“It’s a special treat. It’s ISTEP week, so they are excited to get out,” she said. “It’s been a neat activity to prepare for.”

Getting Together: Silence not golden for this library program
Certain rules govern almost all libraries: be quiet, don’t mar the pages and absolutely no food or drinks on the premises. But a small group of patrons wait until after hours, lock themselves in the back room of the Alexandria-Monroe Public Library, eat popcorn, drink soda and loudly scoff as they watch bad movies.
