Teen charged as adult in armed robbery

ANDERSON, Ind. — A 17-year-old boy has been charged as an adult in an armed robbery in which he allegedly stole shoes and clothes from a travel salesman, according to Anderson Police spokesman Sgt. Bill Casey.

“He was waived through to adult court because of the gun used in the incident,” Casey said.

Casey said Christopher Smith, of Anderson, robbed Jenorie J. Howard, 26, of Fort Wayne on Aug. 31. Casey alleged that Howard had sold products to Smith before, and was surprised to find an armed Smith and two other suspects in the 1700 block of Arrow Avenue last week. After a struggle with the handgun and a scary misfire, Casey said, Howard overpowered Smith. The boys scattered, and Howard flagged down police.

Smith was being held at the Madison County Jail on a $20,000 bond for charges of felony armed robbery, carrying a handgun without a license, criminal confinement and pointing a firearm.

The other two suspects had not been charged as of Wednesday, and Casey said the investigation is ongoing.
