PENDLETON — A tea party meeting is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Thursday at the Pendleton Conservation Club, Fall Park.
Resource center will have grand opening
ANDERSON — Lil Miracles Pregnancy Resource Center will host its grand opening and ribbon cutting ceremony at 6 p.m. Friday, at the Park Place Community Center, 802 E. Fifth St., Anderson. Mayor Kevin Smith will be in attendance and will accompany Lil Miracles president Debbie Danner in the ribbon cutting ceremony.
Jury awards woman $1.5M in medical suit
JEFFERSONVILLE — A southern Indiana jury has awarded $1.5 million to a woman who alleged that a doctor’s decision not to perform surgery left her with a debilitating disorder.
Michelle Wells Fischer’ lawsuit alleged Dr. William H. Garner III’s decision led to the removal of most of her small intestine in 2003.
A Clark County jury last week found Garner liable for Fischer’s injuries.
Police: Man stole $30,000 in jewelry
PORTAGE — Northwestern Indiana police are investigating a report that a man stole about $30,000 in jewelry from a Kmart while it was open.
The theft occurred at a Kmart in Portage about 2:30 a.m. Wednesday. Security footage shows a man walking up to a jewelry counter and working for about 10 minutes on a cable connecting a spinning jewelry rack to the glass case below. The man loosens the rack, puts it into a shopping cart, places another item over it and walks out of the store.
Work finished to lock down manhole covers
INDIANAPOLIS — An Indianapolis utility plagued by manhole explosions that have raised concerns about public safety during the Super Bowl has finished attaching safety locks to cast-iron manhole covers in the city’s downtown area.
The Indianapolis Power & Light Co., said Thursday that it installed locks on 150 manhole covers. Fifty of those are near a Super Bowl Village that will draw thousands of fans beginning in a week, while others are in high-traffic areas near Lucas Oil Stadium.
Lilly Endowment donates $6M to IU
INDIANAPOLIS — The Lilly Endowment has donated more than $6 million to an Indiana University research institute.
The Public Policy Institute on the IUPUI campus in Indianapolis is an umbrella organization for two research centers focusing on criminal justice and Indiana urban policy.
