Guide Day today at Hoosier Park

ANDERSON — A day for former Guide Corp. salary and hourly employees, family and friends will be from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. today at Hoosier Park. Lunch is $5.95 and those attending should check in with Club Centaur.



American Legion conducts elections

ALEXANDRIA — The Alexander Bright Post 87, American Legion of Alexandria will hold its monthly meeting at 7:30 p.m. Monday at the post, 204 E. Berry St. A meal will be served at 6:30 p.m. prior to the meeting.

Dues for the year of 2011 are now due, as 2010 membership cards expired June 30.

Nomination and election of officers for the 2011 year will be on the meeting agenda.

Commander Keith Hubbard will preside over the meeting.



Baby contest in Markleville

MARKLEVILLE — The 2010 Baby Contest and 2010 Prince & Princess Contest will be held as part of the upcoming Markleville Jamboree.

The baby contest is for ages 2 and under. Those children age 3-8 are eligible for the Prince & Princess Contest.

Contestants may register from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at the tent in the community park. Each contestant will be announced at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at the stage.

Bring a decorated can for each child for donations. The child with the most money will be declared the winner.

Winners will be announced at 6 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 7, at the tent.

All contestants must be in attendance for the announcement of winners.



Church hosts Back-to-School Carnival

ANDERSON — Kingston Avenue Baptist Church, 5403 Kingston Ave., will host a free Back-to-School Carnival from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Aug. 6, and from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 7, for children ages kindergarten through sixth grade.

The event will include an inflatable obstacle course, face painting, crafts, games, giveaways and food. Giveways will include school supplies and haircuts. The haircuts, on Saturday only, will be for the first 40 children who show up. Also on Saturday, a cookout will be held from noon to 1:30 p.m.

Spring Valley Quilt Guild meets Aug. 4

 PENDLETON — The Spring Valley Quilt Guild will have its monthly meeting at 6 p.m. Wednesday at the Pendleton Community Library.

 This month’s speaker will be Sherry Boram and her topic for the month’s program is art quilts.

Anyone who loves quilting is invited to attend.

 The Spring Valley Quilt Guild meets the first Wednesday of every month at the Pendleton Library.  Quilters are reminded to bring show-and-tell, Riley Quilts and Quilts of Valor.  For more information, call Susie Delp at 778-4213.



Vendors sought for Community Fair

ANDERSON — Operation Love is now accepting registrations for craft and food vendors, organizations and church groups for its “Saturday in Park” event set for Sept. 25 at Shadyside Park.

    The city needs additional funds to pay for slight increases in firefighter salaries, as well as $2.35 million for the fire and police pension funds. Thursday night at a city council meeting, a funding suggestion was proposed for the latter, but no solution was determined for the first.
